OUTPUT AND DATA MANAGEMENT
Sample Analysis Files and Data Dictionaries are available for review.
ASA24-Canada uses an adapted version of the ASA24 nutrient database that is reflective of the Canadian food supply. Foods unique to Canada have been added and those not available in Canada removed. Many changes reflect differences in brand name and restaurant items between countries. Metric measurements have also been added.
The ASA24 nutrient database was adapted using the Canadian Nutrient File (CNF 2015) and a Canadian recipe database used for surveillance. A small percentage (8%) of Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) codes could not be matched to Canadian foods. For these, FNDDS codes were retained and nutrient values were adjusted to account for fortification differences, when necessary. Portion sizes were assigned Canadian gram weights if available. If not, FNDDS gram weights consistent with Canadian portion sizes were used. For items in the CNF and Canadian recipe database without complete nutrient profiles, appropriate FNDDS values were used when available.
The dietary supplement database used in ASA24-Canada is based on Health Canada’s Licensed Natural Health Products Database and supplemented by the NHANES Dietary Supplement Database 2007-2008.
ASA24-Canada-2016 also links to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Patterns Equivalents Database and can provide amounts of food groups and other dietary components (e.g., added sugars, oils).
DATA REVIEW & CLEANING
ASA24-Canada output includes codes from the Canadian Nutrient File based on the information entered by Respondents. No other processing or quality control measures are conducted by the system. As with any data collection initiative, Researchers should carefully assess the quality of the data collected from their study Respondents. The National Cancer Institute’s ASA24 Website offers a downloadable resource to support research study staff in reviewing and cleaning ASA24 data, and addresses Frequently Asked Questions on Output & Data Management.
